The West Coast of Ireland – Sligo Abbey

Sligo Abbey was founded in 1253 under the patronage of the Baron of Offaly, Maurice Fitzgerald.
Although it is called “an abbey” it was actually a Dominican friary. The friar preachers, in contrast to monks who seldom left their their abbeys, used to invite outsiders to worship in their churches and travelled outside their friaries preaching and completing pilgrimages.
