Lisbon – Belém

Belém is located at the mouth of the River Tagus, 6 kilometres west of the city centre. The area was developed during the prosperity of the Age of Discovery. Vasco da Gama sailed out from Belém in 1497 and successfully navigated a sea route to India. In gratitude for the wealth gained from the spice trade, Manuel I ordered the building of Belém Tower and magnificent the Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém.
